Comparing Island-Hopping vs. Island Cruises

Adventure Specialist Lene in the Galapagos. Here at Journeys International, we offer multiple ways to explore the enchanting Galapagos Islands. You can embark on an expedition cruise that moves between the islands, or you can choose to stay on the islands at local hotels and explore from there. Both options provide unique experiences and breathtaking encounters with the diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes of this extraordinary archipelago.

Having experienced the Galapagos via an inter-island cruise before, on my most recent trip to Ecuador I decided to try a different way of exploring the islands (that’s me on the left). I wanted to offer fellow travelers a glimpse into my island-hopping adventure, staying at local hotels and delving into the beauty and culture of the Galapagos.

Santa Cruz: A Tranquil EscapeTortoise in the Galapagos.

I began my journey in the highlands of Santa Cruz, staying at Enchanted Galapagos, a beautiful and serene lodge about 15 minutes from the bustling port town of Puerto Ayora. Nestled amidst lush greenery, the lodge offers a tranquil retreat from the town’s lively energy. The grounds are adorned with tropical flora, and the amenities, including a large pool, Jacuzzi, and hammocks, made for perfect relaxation. The surrounding countryside provided scenic walking and biking opportunities, where I could immerse myself in the natural beauty of the island.

Santa Cruz is the most populated island in the Galapagos and serves as a gateway to several key attractions. A visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station is a must, where you can learn about ongoing conservation efforts and see the famous giant tortoises. Another highlight is Tortuga Bay, a stunning stretch of white sand beach that offers calm waters for kayaking and snorkeling.

Blue waters of the Galapagos Islands.Exploring Bartolome Island

From Santa Cruz, I embarked on a day trip to Bartolome Island, one of the most iconic spots in the Galapagos. The two-hour yacht journey was a delight, filled with lively conversations with fellow travelers from Australia and the US. Bartolome is famous for Pinnacle Rock, a towering volcanic formation that has become synonymous with the Galapagos. Climbing the 375 steps to the summit was well worth the effort, as the panoramic views were simply breathtaking.

Our naturalist guide brought the landscape to life, pointing out the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this volcanic environment. We were fortunate to spot Galapagos Penguins, the only penguin species found north of the equator, along with sea lions basking on the rocky shores. The snorkeling here was exceptional, with sightings of sea turtles, rays, and White-Tipped Reef Sharks. The crystal-clear waters offered a vibrant underwater world, teeming with life.

Isabela Island: Nature and AdventureSea lion in the Galapagos.

Next, I took a fast ferry to Isabela Island, the largest of the Galapagos archipelago. Known for its wild landscapes and abundant wildlife, Isabela is a haven for nature lovers. The two-hour ride was smooth, though I’ve heard it can be quite choppy during certain months, so it’s always wise to be prepared.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Emma, a cheerful National Park guide, who led me to my next adventure at Las Tintoreras. This small group of islets, just off the coast of Puerto Villamil, is a hotspot for marine life. Snorkeling here was a highlight of my trip. The waters were brimming with life, from playful sea lions to elegant sea turtles, and even the elusive reef sharks that give the area its name.

Bird with red plumage in the Galapagos Islands.Staying at Scalesia Lodge in the highlands of Isabela was a unique experience. The tented lodge blends luxury with nature, offering spacious, air-conditioned tents surrounded by the lush forest. The lodge’s design encourages guests to unwind and reconnect with nature, whether lounging in the common areas or exploring the nearby trails.

Isabela is also home to Sierra Negra, one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos. The hike to its crater is challenging but rewarding, with sweeping views of the caldera and, if you’re lucky, a sighting of the vibrant Vermilion Flycatcher. For those seeking more adventure, the trek can be extended to Volcan Chico, where you can witness the raw volcanic landscape up close.

San Cristobal Island: Coastal CharmPinnipeds on the beach in the Galapagos.

My final stop was San Cristobal Island, the easternmost island in the archipelago and the first one that Charles Darwin visited in 1835. I reached it via a 40-minute flight on a small Emetebe Airlines plane, which offered stunning aerial views of the islands.

I stayed at Hotel Casa Opuntia, a charming waterfront hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the island’s capital. The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring the town and the nearby beaches, including the sea lion-filled shores of Playa Mann and Carola Beach.

One of the most memorable experiences in San Cristobal was snorkeling at Kicker Rock, a striking volcanic formation rising out of the ocean. Known locally as León Dormido, or the “Sleeping Lion,” this site is renowned for its diverse marine life. While the divers in our group spotted hammerhead sharks, I enjoyed swimming alongside sea lions, sea turtles, and an array of colorful tropical fish. The four-hour excursion also included a delicious lunch and some free time on a secluded beach, making it a perfect day out on the water.

My land-based adventure was phenomenal, but then again, so was the cruise I embarked on several years ago! The Galapagos offer a special opportunity to encounter wildlife species found nowhere else in the world in their beautiful natural habitat.

Choosing the Best Way to Experience the Galapagos: Cruise vs. Land-Based

Glamping accommodations in the Galapagos.Cruises and land-based trips each offer unique advantages in the Galapagos. Now that I’ve embarked on both, I’m uniquely positioned to compare the two methods of exploring these islands. Here are my takeaways from my recent land-based adventure:

  1. Deeper Cultural Immersion: Staying in local lodges and hotels instead of aboard an expedition ship allows you to engage with the local culture and communities, explore vibrant towns, and experience daily life in the Galapagos. You can interact with residents, sample local cuisine, and gain a deeper understanding of the islands’ heritage.
  2. More Flexibility and Freedom: Land-based trips provide greater flexibility in your schedule, allowing you to choose activities and excursions based on your interests, whether hiking, snorkeling, or relaxing on a secluded beach. You can adapt your itinerary to your pace, ensuring a more personalized experience.
  3. Options to Extend Stays for a Closer Look: Spend more time on individual islands, thoroughly exploring their unique landscapes and wildlife, ideal for those who prefer to savor their surroundings. Whether it’s a multi-day hike or an extended stay at a particular lodge, the land-based approach allows for a deeper connection with each destination.
  4. Varied Accommodations: Our selection of accommodations ensures comfort and sustainability, deeply connected to the environment. Each lodge or hotel offers its own unique character and amenities, providing a range of options to suit different preferences and budgets.

When to Choose Inter-Island Cruises Instead

Inter-island cruises are also a fantastic way to explore the Galapagos. They offer a structured experience with the convenience of island-to-island transportation, all meals provided, and the ability to visit more remote islands that may be difficult to reach on a land-based trip. Cruises are ideal for those who prefer a more hands-off approach to travel planning or enjoy the camaraderie of group travel.

Whether you choose the intimacy of a cruise or the immersive depth of a land-based trip, the Galapagos Islands promise a journey of discovery, wonder, and awe. Each experience offers unique perspectives and unforgettable memories. Join us at Journeys International and embark on the adventure that resonates most with your spirit of exploration. Check out our selection of both cruise and land-based adventures and schedule a call with me to chat more about which may be the best fit for your travel goals.

If you’ve already explored the Galapagos and are eager to discover more of mainland Ecuador, check out our other Ecuador itineraries. These can be customized to create your perfect private adventure. Happy exploring!

In the heart of Thailand, amidst the ebb and flow of daily life, the calendar holds special days that beckon the nation to pause, reflect, and celebrate. Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, two of the most visually stunning and spiritually significant festivals, embody the essence of Thai culture, its deep-rooted spirituality, and its communal ethos of joy, hope, and renewal.

Curious about these festivals? Let’s dive a little deeper into the rich history and emotional landscape of Thailand’s Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals, intricately weaving their historical roots into the vibrant tapestry of these celebrations.

Loy Krathong Festival Themed PhotoLoy Krathong: A Symphony of Light on Water

Rooted in the ancient tradition of the Sukhothai Kingdom, over 800 years ago, Loy Krathong embodies the Thai people’s reverence for water. This luminous festival, held on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, has evolved from its origins as a Brahmanic ceremony into a profound Buddhist ritual. It’s a gesture of gratitude to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha, for the year’s bounty and an apology for the necessary pollution of her rivers and streams. Participants craft krathongs, small floating offerings, as a symbolic act of letting go—releasing anger, resentment, and impurities into the water, thus cleansing the spirit and embracing hope for the future.

releasing lantern into the skyYi Peng: The Lantern Festival of Northern Thailand

Yi Peng, with its roots intertwined with ancient Brahmanic ceremonies adapted by Thai Buddhism, is celebrated alongside Loy Krathong in Northern Thailand’s Lanna culture. Marked by the release of thousands of lanterns into the night sky, Yi Peng is a visual and spiritual spectacle. Each lantern ascends with prayers and wishes, illuminating the sky with the collective aspirations of the community. This act of release, signifying the letting go of ills and misfortunes, is believed to bring good luck and is believed to be symbolic of the Buddha’s wisdom shining across the earth, guiding the lost back to the path of righteousness.

Connection & Transformation Through Tradition

While highlighting unique elements of Thai culture, both festivals converge in their thematic cores of renewal, reflection, and letting go. They embody the Buddhist principles of impermanence, fostering a shared moment of introspection and communal joy. In a world often divided, these festivals stand as a testament to the power of cultural traditions to unite, inspire, and transform.

Participating in the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals can deeply impact individuals cognitively and emotionally, blending catharsis with awe. This experience has the potential to not only immerse travelers in the local culture but also touch deep psychological and emotional chords within individuals. Scientific research underscores the significance of these types of physical symbolic gestures— such as releasing lanterns and floating krathongs—as powerful tools for emotional healing and processing. These acts allow individuals to symbolically let go of burdens, fostering a sense of renewal and emotional release. Engaging in these communal rituals can enhance feelings of connection and belonging, pivotal elements for psychological well-being. Moreover, the collective experience of awe observed during these festivals, characterized by the shared witnessing of beauty and wonder, is linked to increased happiness, stress reduction, and a more profound sense of connection with the world. the emotional landscape of Loy Krathong and Yi Peng is intricately tied to their capacity to elicit these universal psychological responses, making participation a deeply transformative experience that resonates with the core of human emotional and spiritual needs.

Experience It for Yourself: A Rare Journey into Thailand

This year, Journeys International is offering travelers an opportunity not just to witness, but to partake in these age-old traditions. Their meticulously curated Thailand Festivals of Water and Light Rare Journey is an invitation to immerse oneself in the heart of Thai culture and to experience firsthand the spiritual and communal ethos of its people.

As the trip weaves through the historical sites of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, culminating in the vibrant celebrations in Chiang Mai, travelers are offered a rare glimpse into the soul of Thailand. It’s an exploration that transcends the boundaries of conventional tourism, fostering deep connections, understanding, and memories that linger long after the lanterns have drifted away and the krathongs have floated out of sight. The team at Journeys International is excited to join the league of members of 1% for the Planet, all of whom have committed to donating at least 1% of revenue to planet-sustaining not-for-profit organizations. For Journeys, this step is consistent with our decades-long commitment to sustaining natural environments and traditional cultures in partnership with local communities in the places we visit.

Our Conservation Story

young woman and manThe founders of Journeys International, Will and Joan Weber (then Joan Schwartz), first met on a campus organizing committee for the first Earth Day in 1970. In many ways, this momentous global event – the start of Earth Day and the birth of the environmental movement – planted the seed for Journeys International’s eventual creation, although Will and Joan had no idea at the time that they would spend their lives as partners in life, business, and conservation.

After graduating from college, Will and Joan moved to Nepal for work in the Peace Corps and schools. In their final year in Kathmandu, Will helped the team working to establish a National Parks system in Nepal. Upon returning to the United States, they encouraged friends to visit the Himalayas. However, they realized how difficult it was for American travelers to visit Nepal in ways ways that included cultural connection and contributions to conservation and they began planning trips themselves.

When Will and Joan planned their first trips in 1978 and 1979, one of the goals was to support local people and the conservation of their culture through income from tourism. A second goal was to leverage tourism to support conservation. Journeys International has been committed to sustainable travel since the very beginning. Honoring Earth has been one of our company values since the start.

Roots in Ecotourism

Our founders understood the profound impact of culturally-respectful and environmentally-sensitive travel. Rather than merely extracting resources from the places we were visiting, we believed, and continue to believe, in leaving a positive mark. This philosophy laid the groundwork for the concept of ecotourism.

Weber family stands in front of Eco-Tour bus

Over the years, the team at Journeys International has worked to identify specific ways to connect across cultures, nurture natural environments, and care for the world around us. We have prioritized partnerships with ground operators owned locally in the destinations where we travel. We craft itineraries intentionally to include as much cultural interaction as possible, and to minimize the negative environmental impact. As collective knowledge improves about how to manage and travel sustainably, we aim to learn and improve.

Alongside Journeys International, Will and Joan started a non-profit grant-making organization called the Earth Preservation Fund (EPF).  The EPF channels contributions from Journeys travelers to projects in our destinations where relatively small amounts of money can go a long way to support conservation and development. This is a prime example of the benefits that travel can deliver to local communities – ecotourism in action.

A Journey Through Time

As we reflect on our journey from the early Nepal trips to our current extensive trip offerings, one thing remains constant—the unwavering commitment to our founding principles. Today, Journeys International stands as a testament to over 45 years of ecotourism evolution in action.

Under the leadership of second-generation owner Robin Weber Pollak, we have expanded our destinations and honed our skills, yet our core values persist. Our growth has been deliberate, with new destinations added only after establishing personal relationships and gaining a deep understanding of the local cultures and environments.

Our team continues to consider how to care for the planet and its people as responsibly as possible. In the past decade, we have eliminated printed marketing and internal printed documents. We have shifted to remote operations and eliminated the carbon footprint of commuting. We offset the full carbon footprint of all travel. We are now embarking on the process to become a B Corporation, but in the meantime….

Another Step: Joining 1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet logo

The natural next step for Journeys International is formalizing our commitment to environmental and cultural sustainability and regeneration. 1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses and nonprofits committed to addressing the planet’s challenges. The principle is simple but powerful: participating businesses pledge to donate 1% of their annual sales to conservation causes through the network. This collective effort aims to drive positive change and support organizations actively working towards the conservation and restoration of our planet. By aligning ourselves with 1% for the Planet, Journeys International solidifies its commitment to responsible travel and environmental stewardship, formalizing the commitment that a portion of our proceeds will directly contribute to the well-being of the places we explore and cherish.

This commitment reinforces our dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation. For 2024, 1% of our annual sales will be donated to environmental causes through this global network of businesses and nonprofits. Excitingly, the EPF is now an environmental partner in the network, and we will continue to support and nurture the work of that longstanding partner. We also plan to support our commitment with team volunteer work for environmental partners within the 1% for the Planet network. The International team has pledged to complete a total of 100 volunteer hours in honor of Earth Day and our new partnership.

As you embark on your next adventure with Journeys International, know that you are not only exploring hidden worlds but also contributing to the preservation of our planet. Your goals for exploration align with our commitment to environmental stewardship, and together, we can create a positive impact on the places we visit. Thank you for being a part of the Journeys International family and our vision. Here’s to more adventures, discoveries, and a sustainable future for all.

Plus: Travel Tips for Your Next Adventure

The Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, is a celebration marking the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It’s a festival with a history spanning more than 4,000 years. Deeply rooted in customs and legends, it is primarily celebrated in China, Vietnam (where it’s called Tết), South Korea (Seollal), and by the Chinese diaspora worldwide. The festival begins on the first new moon of the lunar calendar and lasts until the first full moon, encompassing traditions ranging from family reunions and giving gifts of red envelopes (symbolizing good luck) to grand public celebrations including fireworks and dragon dances.

As the Lunar New Year adorns Asia with its vibrant colors and rich traditions, the Journeys International team has found ourselves inspired to learn more about how this festival is celebrated across the region. Are you curious about such festivities and whether or not it’s an ideal time to visit the places with grand celebrations? The Journeys team has done the research work for you, delving into whether this time of year is suitable for travel, exploring the nuances of each destination’s events, uncovering the best times to visit if you’re planning an adventure into Asia, and revealing how you can discover these countries with Journeys International (we’d love to have you join us)!

China

The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is China’s most significant holiday, featuring family reunions, traditional foods, and elaborate fireworks. Streets are adorned with red lanterns, symbolizing prosperity and happiness. Red envelopes, often with money inside, are gifted by elders to younger family members. It’s the biggest celebration of the year.

  • Is the Lunar New Year a good time to visit China? While it could potentially be an insightful cultural immersion experience in the right context, due to extensive closures, the mass travel of locals, and winter weather conditions, travel throughout China during this festival often presents significant challenges for tourists.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? The best periods are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), avoiding the festival rush if you’re looking to also visit important historical sites and engage in cultural activities.
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into China? Yes, Journeys offers customizable adventures, like our Enchanted China itinerary. We don’t currently offer any custom trip options during the Lunar New Year due to the number of closures and challenges in arranging travel.

Thailand

In Thailand, the Lunar New Year is celebrated by its Thai-Chinese communities with vibrant street markets, dragon dances, and lantern festivals, particularly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. While not a public holiday, it is still celebrated by several communities in Thailand with decorations, firecrackers, fantastic food, performances, and more for this occasion. Thailand also has its national New Year celebration, Songkran, which is celebrated on April 13th with street parties and water fights.

  • Is Lunar New Year a good time to visit Thailand? Yes, for experiencing the fusion of Thai and Chinese cultures. It’s also a good time to visit Thailand for weather considerations.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? The cool season, from November to February, offers a comfortable climate. However, depending on the region of Thailand you’re visiting and your travel goal, much of the year may be an appropriate time to visit.
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into Thailand? Yes, Journeys offers several customizable adventures. We are also offering a special group trip, Thailand Festivals of Water and Light Rare Journey, for 2024.

Vietnam

Tết, the Vietnamese New Year or Lunar New Year also transforms the country with its festive atmosphere, featuring flower markets, traditional foods, and reverence for ancestors. Red envelopes filled with cash are given to children and savory rice cakes are often served to mark the occasion.

  • Is Tết/Lunar New Year a good time to visit Vietnam? Travelers should be mindful of the busy period and temporary closures. It is generally not recommended that international travelers visit Vietnam at this time because roadways and transportation can get very congested and difficult to navigate.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? November – March is ideal for exploration, although some adventurers also enjoy the shoulder months.
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into Vietnam? Yes, there are several customizable trips offered in Vietnam.

South Korea

Called Seollal, the Korean New Year is a Lunar New Year celebration marked by family gatherings, folk games, and special foods like rice cake soup. It’s a time for honoring ancestors and celebrating the coming year.

  • Is the Korean New Year/Lunar New Year a good time to visit South Korea? It offers a unique cultural insight, but many businesses close and the weather can get below freezing this time of year. Travelers may want to wait until spring or fall to visit instead.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? The best seasons for visiting are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October).
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into South Korea? Yes! See our Discover South Korea customizable trip for more information.

Indonesia

While it’s not a national holiday, regions with significant Chinese populations, such as Jakarta and Bali, observe the Lunar New Year, called Imlek. You may see red lanterns, temple ceremonies, lion dances, and festive gatherings. Lunar New Year celebrations were banned until 2002, but are now marked with shop closures, decorations, and gifts of citrus or flowers.

  • Is Lunar New Year a good time to visit Indonesia? Yes, Indonesia can be a wonderful destination year-round, including during the Lunar New Year.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? Some travelers prefer the dry season, but Indonesia can be a great year-round destination depending on your travel goals.
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into Indonesia? Journeys has several customizable Indonesia adventures to fit a variety of traveler desires and needs, from Bali to Jakarta, through Borneo and the Komodo Islands, and beyond.

Japan

Though the Lunar New Year is not widely celebrated here, regions with significant Chinese heritage observe the festival with local events and traditions.

  • Is the Lunar New Year a good time to visit Japan? For a unique, quieter experience amidst Japan’s winter beauty, it could be the right fit for the right person. However, Journeys International typically recommends travel to Japan in the spring and fall months.
  • When is the ideal time to visit? March to May for spring blossoms and October to November for autumn foliage are ideal.
  • Does Journeys International offer adventures into Japan? Yes, we have multiple customizable itineraries for Japan for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. A Rare Journey into Japan is also planned for Fall 2024 for those who enjoy once-in-a-lifetime group adventures.

The Lunar New Year not only marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle but also opens a window into the rich cultural heart of several countries across Asia. It’s an appropriate time for reflection, renewal, and mindful exploration of the practices and traditions of countries and communities around the world. The Journeys International team is here to cultivate wonder and guide you, ensuring your travel plans align with both the festive spirit and the practical aspects of international exploration. Embrace the beauty and diversity of Asia with us, and let the Lunar New Year inspire your next great adventure into this region of our beautiful world.

Yet, research highlights their crucial role in our well-being and mental health. Our new Surprising Journeys offers an innovative way to reintegrate these vital elements into our adult lives.

The Vital Role of Awe
