Comparing Island-Hopping vs. Island Cruises

Adventure Specialist Lene in the Galapagos. Here at Journeys International, we offer multiple ways to explore the enchanting Galapagos Islands. You can embark on an expedition cruise that moves between the islands, or you can choose to stay on the islands at local hotels and explore from there. Both options provide unique experiences and breathtaking encounters with the diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes of this extraordinary archipelago.

Having experienced the Galapagos via an inter-island cruise before, on my most recent trip to Ecuador I decided to try a different way of exploring the islands (that’s me on the left). I wanted to offer fellow travelers a glimpse into my island-hopping adventure, staying at local hotels and delving into the beauty and culture of the Galapagos.

Santa Cruz: A Tranquil EscapeTortoise in the Galapagos.

I began my journey in the highlands of Santa Cruz, staying at Enchanted Galapagos, a beautiful and serene lodge about 15 minutes from the bustling port town of Puerto Ayora. Nestled amidst lush greenery, the lodge offers a tranquil retreat from the town’s lively energy. The grounds are adorned with tropical flora, and the amenities, including a large pool, Jacuzzi, and hammocks, made for perfect relaxation. The surrounding countryside provided scenic walking and biking opportunities, where I could immerse myself in the natural beauty of the island.

Santa Cruz is the most populated island in the Galapagos and serves as a gateway to several key attractions. A visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station is a must, where you can learn about ongoing conservation efforts and see the famous giant tortoises. Another highlight is Tortuga Bay, a stunning stretch of white sand beach that offers calm waters for kayaking and snorkeling.

Blue waters of the Galapagos Islands.Exploring Bartolome Island

From Santa Cruz, I embarked on a day trip to Bartolome Island, one of the most iconic spots in the Galapagos. The two-hour yacht journey was a delight, filled with lively conversations with fellow travelers from Australia and the US. Bartolome is famous for Pinnacle Rock, a towering volcanic formation that has become synonymous with the Galapagos. Climbing the 375 steps to the summit was well worth the effort, as the panoramic views were simply breathtaking.

Our naturalist guide brought the landscape to life, pointing out the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this volcanic environment. We were fortunate to spot Galapagos Penguins, the only penguin species found north of the equator, along with sea lions basking on the rocky shores. The snorkeling here was exceptional, with sightings of sea turtles, rays, and White-Tipped Reef Sharks. The crystal-clear waters offered a vibrant underwater world, teeming with life.

Isabela Island: Nature and AdventureSea lion in the Galapagos.

Next, I took a fast ferry to Isabela Island, the largest of the Galapagos archipelago. Known for its wild landscapes and abundant wildlife, Isabela is a haven for nature lovers. The two-hour ride was smooth, though I’ve heard it can be quite choppy during certain months, so it’s always wise to be prepared.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Emma, a cheerful National Park guide, who led me to my next adventure at Las Tintoreras. This small group of islets, just off the coast of Puerto Villamil, is a hotspot for marine life. Snorkeling here was a highlight of my trip. The waters were brimming with life, from playful sea lions to elegant sea turtles, and even the elusive reef sharks that give the area its name.

Bird with red plumage in the Galapagos Islands.Staying at Scalesia Lodge in the highlands of Isabela was a unique experience. The tented lodge blends luxury with nature, offering spacious, air-conditioned tents surrounded by the lush forest. The lodge’s design encourages guests to unwind and reconnect with nature, whether lounging in the common areas or exploring the nearby trails.

Isabela is also home to Sierra Negra, one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos. The hike to its crater is challenging but rewarding, with sweeping views of the caldera and, if you’re lucky, a sighting of the vibrant Vermilion Flycatcher. For those seeking more adventure, the trek can be extended to Volcan Chico, where you can witness the raw volcanic landscape up close.

San Cristobal Island: Coastal CharmPinnipeds on the beach in the Galapagos.

My final stop was San Cristobal Island, the easternmost island in the archipelago and the first one that Charles Darwin visited in 1835. I reached it via a 40-minute flight on a small Emetebe Airlines plane, which offered stunning aerial views of the islands.

I stayed at Hotel Casa Opuntia, a charming waterfront hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the island’s capital. The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring the town and the nearby beaches, including the sea lion-filled shores of Playa Mann and Carola Beach.

One of the most memorable experiences in San Cristobal was snorkeling at Kicker Rock, a striking volcanic formation rising out of the ocean. Known locally as León Dormido, or the “Sleeping Lion,” this site is renowned for its diverse marine life. While the divers in our group spotted hammerhead sharks, I enjoyed swimming alongside sea lions, sea turtles, and an array of colorful tropical fish. The four-hour excursion also included a delicious lunch and some free time on a secluded beach, making it a perfect day out on the water.

My land-based adventure was phenomenal, but then again, so was the cruise I embarked on several years ago! The Galapagos offer a special opportunity to encounter wildlife species found nowhere else in the world in their beautiful natural habitat.

Choosing the Best Way to Experience the Galapagos: Cruise vs. Land-Based

Glamping accommodations in the Galapagos.Cruises and land-based trips each offer unique advantages in the Galapagos. Now that I’ve embarked on both, I’m uniquely positioned to compare the two methods of exploring these islands. Here are my takeaways from my recent land-based adventure:

  1. Deeper Cultural Immersion: Staying in local lodges and hotels instead of aboard an expedition ship allows you to engage with the local culture and communities, explore vibrant towns, and experience daily life in the Galapagos. You can interact with residents, sample local cuisine, and gain a deeper understanding of the islands’ heritage.
  2. More Flexibility and Freedom: Land-based trips provide greater flexibility in your schedule, allowing you to choose activities and excursions based on your interests, whether hiking, snorkeling, or relaxing on a secluded beach. You can adapt your itinerary to your pace, ensuring a more personalized experience.
  3. Options to Extend Stays for a Closer Look: Spend more time on individual islands, thoroughly exploring their unique landscapes and wildlife, ideal for those who prefer to savor their surroundings. Whether it’s a multi-day hike or an extended stay at a particular lodge, the land-based approach allows for a deeper connection with each destination.
  4. Varied Accommodations: Our selection of accommodations ensures comfort and sustainability, deeply connected to the environment. Each lodge or hotel offers its own unique character and amenities, providing a range of options to suit different preferences and budgets.

When to Choose Inter-Island Cruises Instead

Inter-island cruises are also a fantastic way to explore the Galapagos. They offer a structured experience with the convenience of island-to-island transportation, all meals provided, and the ability to visit more remote islands that may be difficult to reach on a land-based trip. Cruises are ideal for those who prefer a more hands-off approach to travel planning or enjoy the camaraderie of group travel.

Whether you choose the intimacy of a cruise or the immersive depth of a land-based trip, the Galapagos Islands promise a journey of discovery, wonder, and awe. Each experience offers unique perspectives and unforgettable memories. Join us at Journeys International and embark on the adventure that resonates most with your spirit of exploration. Check out our selection of both cruise and land-based adventures and schedule a call with me to chat more about which may be the best fit for your travel goals.

If you’ve already explored the Galapagos and are eager to discover more of mainland Ecuador, check out our other Ecuador itineraries. These can be customized to create your perfect private adventure. Happy exploring!

Are you looking to pin the Azores on your travel map? I was – and I did! Nestled in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, this group of nine volcanic islands is turning heads not just for their stunning landscapes and marine wonders but also for their impressive commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable tourism.

Adventure specialist on Journeys International trip into the AzoresI recently experienced these eco-friendly islands firsthand on our Azores Archipelago Revealed adventure at Journeys International. Previously having lived in Hawaii for three years and now having explored the Azores for myself, I wouldn’t characterize this group of islands, as some have, as the “Hawaiian Islands of the Atlantic.” Instead, I think the Azores are incredible in their own right as a beautiful archipelago with unique culture and natural wonders. Explorers should seek out these islands for the active and interactive activities that will introduce them to a culture committed to helping Mama Earth thrive.

While hiking, biking, and eating through the islands, I was keen to learn about how Azoreans integrate sustainability into their tourism culture. As a mindful traveler hoping to help other mindful travelers, I’m eager to share what I learned about the eco-friendly practices locals have implemented to keep their ecosystems healthy and thriving.  Let’s dive in.

A Green BlueprintSao Miguel Island in the Azores

The Azores are a shining example of sustainable thinking. Thanks to their remote location about 1,500 kilometers from the coast of Portugal, the islands have always had to be self-reliant. This necessity has fostered a culture of sustainability that is woven into the fabric of their resource management strategies.

Renewable energy is big here. The islands aim to be carbon-neutral by 2050, and they’re well on their way to achieving this goal through harnessing geothermal, wind, and hydroelectric power. When you visit, you’ll notice that much of their energy comes from these clean and green sources. It’s this kind of forward-thinking that earned the Azores the praise of being the first archipelago in the world recognized by EarthCheck (a leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for global travel and tourism) as a Sustainable Destination.

Gorreana Tea Plantation AzoresExploring the Azores with Care

When it comes to tourism, sustainability is always at the forefront of adventure design. Ecotourism isn’t just a buzzword here; it’s a practice woven into the everyday. Each activity is designed with the earth in mind, from thoughtful hiking through untouched landscapes to sustainable whale watching tours. There are mutually enforced agreements in place to keep hiking trails lush, prioritize marine life protection, and keep the islands a pleasant place for the locals to live.

Take the whale watching industry, for example. The Azores are one of the best places in the world to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. At certain times of the year, you could see Orcas, Blue whales, Humpback whales, Sperm whales, and many other Cetaceans enjoying the surrounding waters. Local operators are committed to responsible practices that ensure minimal impact on the whales and their environment, such as small group sizes, maintaining distance from animals, and minimizing noise near animals, among other guidelines. Tour operators also hire marine biologists to give educational briefings that teach visitors about animal behavior, the importance of conservation, and how to behave on the boats when they encounter these spectacular yet susceptible animals.

Local Flavors, Global Impact… and Wine!

Sustainability in the Azores isn’t limited to energy and ecotourism. It extends to the dining table as well! The islands boast a farm-to-table scene that’s hard to beat. A lot of what I consumed here was grown or caught locally. The volcanic soil and rich ocean make for some incredible flavors in fresh seafood dishes, unique cheeses, and delicious wines.

The archipelago’s volcanic soil imparts a distinct mineral quality to the grapes grown there. The islands are particularly famous for their white wines, made predominantly from the indigenous Verdelho grape, which thrives in the breezy and humid climate. Pico Island, recognized by UNESCO for its remarkable wine landscape, is at the heart of the wine culture. The vineyards are nestled between black volcanic rocks, creating a striking contrast against the deep blue of the Atlantic. Wineries in the Azores embrace sustainable practices, including using organic cultivation methods and relying on the unique ecosystem to maintain vine health, reducing the need for chemical interventions. A visit to the Azores isn’t complete without touring these picturesque vineyards, meeting the passionate winemakers, and, of course, sampling the locally-made wines.

Visiting local restaurants and vineyards not only satisfies your taste buds but also supports local farmers and fishermen. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food items from abroad and helps maintain the economic sustainability of the islands’ communities.

Generally, I am not much of a wine drinker because I am susceptible to headaches. However, on this trip, I couldn’t shy away from trying the local varietals while traveling. I carefully sampled a glass of Pico wine and was pleasantly surprised to still be headache-free at the end of the day. I discovered that the sustainable wine-making processes used in the Azores reduced impurities and produced high-quality wines that even I could enjoy.

Community and CultureTerra Nostra Garden Azores

The local community is deeply involved in sustainability efforts. Many Azoreans are descendants of generations of islanders who’ve lived in harmony with nature, and they bring this respect for the environment into every aspect of modern life and business.

When you visit, you’ll feel this community spirit everywhere—at local festivals filled with traditional music and dance, at artisan markets featuring locally made crafts, and in your locally owned, managed, and decorated accommodations. Engaging with the community gives you a deeper appreciation of the Azores not just as a travel destination, but as a place where people live, work, and care for their environment.

The Call of the Azores

Every aspect of your visit to the Azores, from the moment you land to your last day on the islands, offers a chance to participate in and learn about sustainability. This isn’t just about having a great vacation—it’s about experiencing and contributing to a place that truly embodies the principles of sustainable living.

If you’re itching for a European getaway that satisfies your wanderlust without compromising environmental ethics, the Azores should be at the top of your list!

If you’re interested in planning an adventure, I’d love to share more of my Azores experience. Please get in touch with me to chat and start planning your own memorable and sustainable trip to the Azores.

The team at Journeys International is excited to join the league of members of 1% for the Planet, all of whom have committed to donating at least 1% of revenue to planet-sustaining not-for-profit organizations. For Journeys, this step is consistent with our decades-long commitment to sustaining natural environments and traditional cultures in partnership with local communities in the places we visit.

Our Conservation Story

young woman and manThe founders of Journeys International, Will and Joan Weber (then Joan Schwartz), first met on a campus organizing committee for the first Earth Day in 1970. In many ways, this momentous global event – the start of Earth Day and the birth of the environmental movement – planted the seed for Journeys International’s eventual creation, although Will and Joan had no idea at the time that they would spend their lives as partners in life, business, and conservation.

After graduating from college, Will and Joan moved to Nepal for work in the Peace Corps and schools. In their final year in Kathmandu, Will helped the team working to establish a National Parks system in Nepal. Upon returning to the United States, they encouraged friends to visit the Himalayas. However, they realized how difficult it was for American travelers to visit Nepal in ways ways that included cultural connection and contributions to conservation and they began planning trips themselves.

When Will and Joan planned their first trips in 1978 and 1979, one of the goals was to support local people and the conservation of their culture through income from tourism. A second goal was to leverage tourism to support conservation. Journeys International has been committed to sustainable travel since the very beginning. Honoring Earth has been one of our company values since the start.

Roots in Ecotourism

Our founders understood the profound impact of culturally-respectful and environmentally-sensitive travel. Rather than merely extracting resources from the places we were visiting, we believed, and continue to believe, in leaving a positive mark. This philosophy laid the groundwork for the concept of ecotourism.

Weber family stands in front of Eco-Tour bus

Over the years, the team at Journeys International has worked to identify specific ways to connect across cultures, nurture natural environments, and care for the world around us. We have prioritized partnerships with ground operators owned locally in the destinations where we travel. We craft itineraries intentionally to include as much cultural interaction as possible, and to minimize the negative environmental impact. As collective knowledge improves about how to manage and travel sustainably, we aim to learn and improve.

Alongside Journeys International, Will and Joan started a non-profit grant-making organization called the Earth Preservation Fund (EPF).  The EPF channels contributions from Journeys travelers to projects in our destinations where relatively small amounts of money can go a long way to support conservation and development. This is a prime example of the benefits that travel can deliver to local communities – ecotourism in action.

A Journey Through Time

As we reflect on our journey from the early Nepal trips to our current extensive trip offerings, one thing remains constant—the unwavering commitment to our founding principles. Today, Journeys International stands as a testament to over 45 years of ecotourism evolution in action.

Under the leadership of second-generation owner Robin Weber Pollak, we have expanded our destinations and honed our skills, yet our core values persist. Our growth has been deliberate, with new destinations added only after establishing personal relationships and gaining a deep understanding of the local cultures and environments.

Our team continues to consider how to care for the planet and its people as responsibly as possible. In the past decade, we have eliminated printed marketing and internal printed documents. We have shifted to remote operations and eliminated the carbon footprint of commuting. We offset the full carbon footprint of all travel. We are now embarking on the process to become a B Corporation, but in the meantime….

Another Step: Joining 1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet logo

The natural next step for Journeys International is formalizing our commitment to environmental and cultural sustainability and regeneration. 1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses and nonprofits committed to addressing the planet’s challenges. The principle is simple but powerful: participating businesses pledge to donate 1% of their annual sales to conservation causes through the network. This collective effort aims to drive positive change and support organizations actively working towards the conservation and restoration of our planet. By aligning ourselves with 1% for the Planet, Journeys International solidifies its commitment to responsible travel and environmental stewardship, formalizing the commitment that a portion of our proceeds will directly contribute to the well-being of the places we explore and cherish.

This commitment reinforces our dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation. For 2024, 1% of our annual sales will be donated to environmental causes through this global network of businesses and nonprofits. Excitingly, the EPF is now an environmental partner in the network, and we will continue to support and nurture the work of that longstanding partner. We also plan to support our commitment with team volunteer work for environmental partners within the 1% for the Planet network. The International team has pledged to complete a total of 100 volunteer hours in honor of Earth Day and our new partnership.

As you embark on your next adventure with Journeys International, know that you are not only exploring hidden worlds but also contributing to the preservation of our planet. Your goals for exploration align with our commitment to environmental stewardship, and together, we can create a positive impact on the places we visit. Thank you for being a part of the Journeys International family and our vision. Here’s to more adventures, discoveries, and a sustainable future for all.

Cultural Richness and Conservation Efforts

Malawi’s rich cultural heritage and conservation initiatives reflect its commitment to sustainable tourism, ensuring that visits contribute positively to local communities and the preservation of natural heritage. Local efforts have played a significant role in revitalizing Malawi’s national parks, transforming them into some of the most vibrant conservation areas in Africa. These initiatives have been crucial in restoring wildlife populations and enhancing biodiversity, and have included incorporating good wildlife management practices, anti-poaching measures, community outreach efforts, habitat restoration, and more.

Zambia: The Untamed Wilderness and Safari Adventures

Zambia offers a contrast with its rugged terrain and abundant wildlife, making it a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers, and is renowned for its unique safari experiences and commitment to conservation and eco-tourism.

…And How to Explore the Nine Pillars of Gross National Happiness Firsthand

Journeys International client at a festival in Bhutan.Around the globe, each culture weaves its own narrative on the pursuit of happiness, crafting philosophies that resonate through time and tradition. Yet, nestled within the majestic folds of the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan offers a particularly enchanting vision of joy—one that transcends conventional measures of prosperity and delves into the soul of well-being: the philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH).

Unveiling the Essence of GNH:

Crafted in the 1970s by Bhutan’s visionary fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, GNH emerged as a bold reimagining of what it means to progress as a nation. It champions a comprehensive view of happiness, stretching beyond economic outputs to embrace mental health, environmental sustainability, and the richness of cultural heritage. Bridging the conceptual foundation of Gross National Happiness and its practical application, Bhutan’s innovative framework for national well-being revolves around the Nine Pillars of GNH. These pillars serve as guiding principles that collectively shape a society where happiness is woven into the very fabric of daily life. By prioritizing psychological well-being, environmental sustainability, and cultural richness alongside economic development, Bhutan presents a holistic approach to progress. This model challenges the global paradigm of measuring success solely through GDP, suggesting instead that true prosperity emerges from a balanced integration of material and spiritual well-being. As we delve into the Nine Pillars, we uncover how each element contributes to creating a resilient, joyful community, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of happiness that is both profound and transformative.

The Nine Pillars of GNH—A Path to Enrichment:

  1. Psychological Wellbeing: Bhutan treasures the tranquility of the mind as the cornerstone of happiness.
  2. Standard of Living: A harmonious blend of simplicity and comfort defines the Bhutanese way of life.
  3. Health: The vitality of the body is intricately linked to the joy of existence in Bhutan.
  4. Education: Beyond academia, Bhutanese education cultivates the soul, preparing individuals for a life of wisdom and ethical integrity.
  5. Cultural Diversity and Resilience: Bhutan’s vibrant tapestry of traditions fosters a deep sense of belonging and communal joy.
  6. Time Use: In Bhutan, the rhythm of life balances productivity with moments of reflection and familial warmth.
  7. Good Governance: The nation’s prosperity is built on the foundations of justice and transparency.
  8. Community Vitality: The strength of community ties lies at the heart of Bhutan’s happiness.
  9. Ecological Diversity and Resilience: A profound respect for nature underpins the Bhutanese ethos, recognizing our deep interconnection with the world around us.

These pillars not only sketch a blueprint for happiness but also invite us to reimagine our own approach to leading a fulfilling life.

Adventure Specialist Victoria Odinet reflects on her experiences in Southeast Asia and improvements since her travels.

Southeast Asia has captured the imagination of travelers for many decades. It still continues to be a favorite region for exploration and for finding transformative experiences. The region has a deep cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and rich traditions that captivate visitors. In 2008, I had the privilege of exploring this enchanting region, traveling through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand for three months. My trip included incredible experiences with local people, and I was impressed by the positive impacts of tourism on the communities that I visited.

Reflecting on my Travels Years Later

Now, as I look back on those adventures, it strikes me that my wonderful memories are also interspersed with the recollection of experiences that wouldn’t pass muster according to the responsible tourism standards that have emerged in the region today. It is gratifying to observe the positive changes that have taken place in various aspects of tourism in Southeast Asia since that trip in 2008. These changes are a testament to the power of awareness and the growing commitment to ethical considerations by travelers and local communities. Here are some examples.

Elephant Activities: Exploitation to Sanctuary

One of the most significant transformations I’ve witnessed is in the treatment of elephants. In the past, riding elephants was a popular tourist activity. Elephant parks would also forcibly train elephants to paint pictures and perform tricks using painful and harmful techniques that hurt these magnificent creatures. Thankfully, increasing awareness of the physical and psychological harm of these tourist activities on elephants has led to the rise of elephant sanctuaries. These sanctuaries offer homes to elephants that used to work with tourists under painful conditions, and they prioritize the well-being of elephants. Here, the elephants live in more natural and humane conditions while visitors can still observe and interact gently and responsibly with the animals.

Tailors in Hoi An: Nighttime Rush to Daytime Excellence

Hoi An, Vietnam, is home to a vibrant custom, tailormade clothing industry. It was once famous for offering overnight custom tailoring services. This often led to particularly exhausted garment workers and questionable labor conditions. Shopowners have now collectively shifted the expectations of travelers so that most clothing is produced in about two days, allowing for daytime instead of overnight work.

However, it is worth noting that the custom tailoring industry in Hoi An has also grown increasingly competitive in recent years, with approximately ten times more tailors in town now than when I first visited. This competitive marketplace puts pricing pressure on producers and motivates some business owners to offer “express service.” The rise of Internet order-taking has complicated the industry, too. Many visitors seek the lowest price among several shops, turning fair pay into the newest ethical consideration in Hoi An. From my perspective, I suggest that as long as travelers feel like they are getting a reasonable deal, they skip the hardnosed haggling.

Water Bottles: Single Use to Sustainable Alternatives

The abundance of single-use plastic water bottles in Southeast Asia used to be a common sight. The region was notorious among travel destinations for having a particular glut of plastic trash. However, I’ve been thrilled to see how many more environmentally conscious alternatives have emerged. Many eco-lodges now provide on-site water purification and bottling in reusable containers. An increasing number of tour operators and activity providers provide refill stations throughout the day, making it easy for travelers to carry their own reusable bottles. This move toward sustainability reduces plastic waste, promotes responsible tourism, and educates tourism workers about the importance of reducing their own plastic waste at home.

Traveler Interest: Overtourism to Sustainable Solutions

Communities in Southeast Asia have long sought to benefit from the interest of tourists. Yet, like many tourism hot spots around the world, too much interest in some really special places has caused environmental and social problems with overtourism.

For example, the stunning beach and lagoon at Maya Bay on Thailand’s Koh Phi Phi was featured in Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie “The Beach” in the year 2000 and became a must-visit spot for people seeking the perfect photo of paradise. Over the next fifteen years or so, the thousands of daily visitors and their boats inflicted so much damage to the beach and reef of Maya Bay that park rangers and conservationists worried that the local populations of coral and reef sharks would die out. This story has an encouraging ending, though, because rangers decided to close Maya Bay for about four years to restore the habitat. Now that it has reopened, boats have to dock on the back side of the island, visitors can only wade up to knee-deep, and beach stays are limited to sixty minutes. All visitors are charged a conservation fee. Through proactive intervention, the beautiful beach and its sensitive ecosystem have gotten a chance to recover.

The city of Siem Reap, home to the temple ruins of Angkor Wat, also has well-known overtourism challenges. Although about two million people visit Angkor Wat every year, a fraction of those people will explore the country’s other incredible sights. Meanwhile, the volume of tourists has led to a water shortage in Siem Reap, and the bas relief carvings on the temples are degrading from tourists’ touch. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of tourists overloaded the town’s waste management infrastructure, and the Siem Reap River was filled with trash. These overtourism woes spurred government improvement efforts. Upgrading roads, installing more bike paths, and expanding sewage systems have not only made the city more visitor-friendly but also reduced visitors’ environmental impact. Officials are also working hard to promote longer visits to encourage a deeper connection with the local culture and contribute to a more sustainable economy.

Progress, but Challenges Remain

While we’ve seen significant progress in many areas, there is still work to do to ensure ethical and sustainable tourism continues to expand in Southeast Asia. Here are a few particular areas that I would like to see change through traveler and tour operator choices and advocacy:

Karen Long Neck Tribes: Despite increased awareness about cultural sensitivity and human rights, the Karen Long Neck Tribes in northern Thailand still face restrictions on their movement and autonomy. Advocacy for their rights and livelihoods remains essential.

Questionable Tiger Petting Operations: While some tiger petting operations have closed, there are still reports of unethical practices in Thailand. Travelers should exercise caution and support initiatives that prioritize the welfare of all animals.

Sustainable Transportation: The region needs to continue investing in sustainable transportation options to reduce the environmental impact of tourism. Encouraging the use of bicycles, electric vehicles, and efficient public transport can help mitigate congestion and pollution.

Supporting Local Communities: Travelers can play a vital role in promoting positive change by supporting local businesses and communities. Initiatives that empower local artisans, promote fair trade, and invest in community-based tourism can have a lasting positive impact.

Environmental Conservation: Conservation efforts should remain a top priority. Protecting delicate ecosystems, reducing plastic waste, and promoting responsible wildlife encounters should be central to any tourism strategy.

Having a Positive Impact Moving Forward

Reflecting on my journeys in Southeast Asia, I am heartened by the positive changes that have taken place, thanks to increased awareness and ethical considerations among travelers, tour operators, and local communities. The shift from exploitative practices to more

However, the journey towards ethical and sustainable tourism is ongoing. It requires the continued dedication of travelers, trip planners, operators like Journeys International, local governments, and communities. By supporting responsible travel, advocating for cultural preservation, and respecting the environment, we can ensure that Southeast Asia remains a beautiful and welcoming destination for generations to come.

As travelers, let’s not only enjoy the beauty of Southeast Asia but also strive to leave a positive impact on the places we visit. Together, we can be stewards of change, preserving the wonders of this region while promoting the well-being of its people and wildlife.

Honoring Earth is one of the Core Values that guide the work of Journeys International. There are a myriad of ways to enact this value while having adventures, and we are always on the lookout for more. In honor of Earth Day and the anniversary of the Earth Preservation Fund – the non-profit organization that supports conservation in Journeys destinations through contributions from Journeys travelers – we’re sharing a list of 40 of our favorite planet-friendly travel practices.

  1.  Ask questions about what you see.
  2.  Practice mindfulness in taking note of your surroundings.
  3.  Notice how your feelings vary in different kinds of environments.
  4.  Bring children along and teach appreciation for wild places.
  5.  Document the beauty of nature, and share it.
  6.  Carry a reusable water bottle.
  7.  In places without clean drinking water, carry a lightweight water filtration bottle from a company like LifeStraw.
  8.  Keep a reusable shopping bag in your daypack.
  9.  Decline plastic straws. If you’re worried about the cleanliness of cups, carry a reusable metal straw with you.
  10.  Take shorter showers.
  11.  Turn the water off while brushing and showering.
  12.  Open your curtains, blinds, and windows. Leave the lights off.
  13.  Take stairs instead of elevators.
  14.  Say “no” to hotel housekeeping.
  15.  Keep to marked trails when hiking to let natural plant life flourish.
  16.  When snorkeling or diving, keep your feet off the reef.
  17.  Pick up litter along your way.
  18.  Eat like a local.
  19.  Choose vegetarian meals when they’re readily available.
  20.  Buy locally produced food and snacks to reduce the transportation footprint of your purchases.
  21.  Choose souvenirs made of reused materials.
  22.  Ask questions about lodges’ and tour companies’ sustainability programs, and their support for local communities.
  23.  Return maps and brochures to be reused by future travelers.
  24.  Use public transportation instead of private cars.
  25.  Hike, walk, trek, bike, raft, or otherwise travel by people power.
  26.  Give a break to over-visited destinations and try lesser-known gems.
  27.  Book non-stop flights whenever possible.
  28.  Offset your emissions with a contribution to a carbon reduction project (or if you book through Journeys International, we do this for you!)
  29.  Plant some trees along the way.
  30.  Rethink the necessity of new gear purchases.
  31.  Leave your electronics at home.
  32.  Unplug all your home appliances while you’re gone.
  33.  Leave your make-up at home.
  34.  Never feed the wildlife
  35.  Never buy animal products as souvenirs.
  36.  Never photograph animals being exploited.
  37.  Never pay to participate in activities that exploit animals.
  38.  Speak up if someone does something harmful to our planet.
  39.  Tell locals and fellow travelers about how you honor the earth.
  40.  Make a donation to support conservation projects.

There are many, many small but impactful ways to make a difference when you embark on an adventure abroad, and every action is a step in the right direction. Each time you travel with Journeys International, a portion of your trip goes to the Earth Preservation Fund to fund projects that help local communities and conservation efforts.
