Here at Journeys International, we offer multiple ways to explore the enchanting Galapagos Islands. You can embark on an expedition cruise that moves between the islands, or you can choose to stay on the islands at local hotels and explore from there. Both options provide unique experiences and breathtaking encounters with the diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes of this extraordinary archipelago. For those who hope to see the greatest number of islands, the greatest number of species, and the furthest reaches of the archipelago, we recommend Galapagos by Sea.
Just imagine waking up each morning anchored beside a new island—an untouched volcanic landscape, dramatic and wild, where sea lions nap on black lava rocks and blue-footed boobies perform their elaborate courtship dances just steps from your path. Aboard your expedition vessel, you’re not simply traveling from point A to point B. You’re part of a floating basecamp that brings you deeper into the remote corners of this protected archipelago, offering access to places unreachable by land-based travelers.
Every day presents new opportunities to connect with nature in its purest form. One morning, you may snorkel alongside playful sea lions, penguins, and marine iguanas in crystal-clear waters. That afternoon, you might hike across ancient lava flows in search of giant tortoises or spot frigatebirds puffing up their crimson chests in display. Onboard naturalist guides—experts in biology, geology, and conservation—transform each encounter into a meaningful experience, sharing stories of evolution, adaptation, and the fragile ecosystems that make the Galapagos so extraordinary.
Life aboard the ship is both comfortable and casual, with shared meals, open decks for wildlife spotting, and spaces to reflect on the awe of the day’s discoveries. Perhaps most rewarding of all, every moment spent in the Galapagos strengthens your connection to the natural world and deepens your appreciation for the delicate balance of life on our planet.
Your Journeys International Adventure Specialist will help you choose the right boat to match your goals, interests, style, dates, and budget. The itinerary described here is a good representation of what you can expect from any boat-based trip through the islands. All travelers are virtually guaranteed to see blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, Galapagos penguins, sea lions, and both marine and land iguanas, and all travelers will visit conservation research facilities where they will see giant tortoises. However, specifics may vary by boat and departure date, including islands visited, landing sites, some bird species, and the likelihood of spotting some marine mammals. You will receive a detailed itinerary for your trip. In the meantime, we are available to consult more deeply as you consider your options.

Next to the wildlife, the guides were the best part of the trip for me. [Our naturalist] was born and raised in San Cristobal, so his knowledge of the islands was vast. Coupled with his exuberant personality, he is probably one of the best, if not the best, guide I have ever had.

All Galapagos cruise passengers must arrive via mainland Ecuador the day before flying to the islands. Land in Quito today, where you will transfer to your local airport hotel by shuttle. Quito is located in a huge valley of the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 9,455 feet – the highest-altitude city in the world. It’s a great place to explore and learn about mainland Ecuador’s culture. (You may also choose to extend here to visit the surrounding volcanic portion of the Andes mountain range.) Alternatively, if you are concerned about altitude, you may arrive via Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, located on the coast. There are fewer appealing attractions in Guayaquil, but the city is at sea level.

BDay 1Arrive San Cristobal
Finally, today, travel to the Galapagos! In the morning, you will be transferred to the airport to collect your tickets for your flight to the islands, which is likely to route via Guayaquil. Upon arrival in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island, the crew will escort you to your anchored yacht. When all of your fellow passengers have arrived, raise anchor and depart for an incredible week of exploration. Lunch will be on board today, as will all meals for the rest of the trip.
Within a few hours, reach Kicker Rock, also known as León Dormido (Spanish for sleeping lion), a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation, rising 500 feet from the ocean. Erosion has split the rock, providing a spectacular backdrop for photographs at sunset. As you circumnavigate the formation, you’ll easily spot blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and frigatebirds on the cliffs. After a briefing on activities for the following day, join the Captain and crew for a welcome cocktail reception.
Throughout the rest of the trip, you can expect the vessel to travel in the evening and into the nighttime hours. The captain will work with your guides to position the boat for the next morning’s excursions. As you travel northward tonight, you will cross the equator.

CDay 2Genovesa/ Philip's Steps / Darwin Bay
Spend the entire day today on Genovesa (Tower Island), considered to be one of the most spectacular islands in all of the Galapagos for its variety and sheer number of birds. This morning, have a dry landing at Prince Philip’s Steps. Red-footed boobies nest here in Palo Santo trees, and Nazca boobies nest near the trail. In an open lava field, find storm petrels in large numbers. If you are lucky, you will see the elusive short-eared owl. Look for the beautiful Red-billed Tropicbird, found in the crevices along the cliff, by kayak or Zodiac. After a BBQ lunch and a demonstration on how to make ceviche, you’ll have the option to explore the cliff up close by kayak, on stand-up paddleboards, or on a deep water snorkeling excursion.
This afternoon, you’ll land at Darwin Bay, a gorgeous coral sand beach. Here, you’ll see both swallow-tailed gulls and lava gulls gathered near the tide pools. A forest of Opuntia cactus and mangroves provides shelter for the Great frigate birds. Males looking to attract mates inflate their red pouches on their chests. Round out the afternoon by relaxing on the beach, or choose to swim with friendly, playful sea lions in these warmer northern waters. When you return to the yacht, you’ll have a short briefing followed by a delicious dinner. If the night is clear, take a stroll out on deck and see a sky full of bright stars. Your guides can point out constellations and help you identify the species of birds flying alongside the yacht.

DDay 3Las Bachas / Cerro Dragon
This morning, you will visit Las Bachas, Spanish for “The Barges.” There is a long stretch of soft, white sand beach and interior lagoons where you’ll find the greater flamingo. The snorkeling from the beach here is wonderful. Located on the northern tip of Santa Cruz is Cerro Dragon (Dragon Hill). Along the trail, you’ll find Darwin Finches, Galapagos Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Audubon Shearwaters, and endemic land iguanas, orange-yellow in color with large spines along their backs, which were once part of the Darwin Station’s breeding research program. In the nearby saltwater lagoon, you’ll find pink flamingos, stilts, pintail ducks, sandpipers, and more. From the top of the hill, enjoy a majestic view of the bay island covered in Opuntia cactus, Palo Santo, and Cordia Lutea. After this evening’s briefing and dinner, sail toward the western islands and cross the equator line for the second time.

EDay 4Punta Vicente Roca / Urbina Bay, Isabela
This morning, at Punta Vicente Roca, a Zodiac ride offers an incredible view of the tuff walls. Enter a wave-sculpted cave and find sea turtles who frequent this area. You may also spot the dorsal fin of a Mola Mola, a giant sunfish. Don’t miss the opportunity to snorkel in this remarkable spot. After lunch, cross the Bolivar Channel, where you’ll often spot whales and dolphins riding the ship’s bow wave. Disembark at Urbina Bay on Isabela Island, where you will find four miles of coastal seabed with remnants of marine life exposed to the air by a 1954 volcanic eruption. While here, you are likely to see land iguanas, marine iguanas, finches, and occasionally giant tortoises. Brown pelicans and flightless cormorants also nest here. You may also encounter penguins while snorkeling! Return to the yacht for a briefing and dinner.

FDay 5Fernandina / Tagus Cove
This morning, disembark by wet landing at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina, the youngest and most pristine Island in the Galapagos. Relatively recent lava flows from an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territories. Flightless cormorants build their nests on the point, and Galapagos hawks fly overhead. There is a chance to snorkel here with sea turtles.
After lunch back on the boat, land at Tagus Cove, also located on the western Island of Isabela. This was a favorite anchorage for pirates and whalers over the centuries. Old graffiti dating back to the 1800’s is written on the rocky cliffs. Explore the surrounding coves by zodiac or kayak to find Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans, and other seabirds. An uphill hike brings you to a saltwater lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the ocean, lava fields, and volcanic formations. End the afternoon with an opportunity to snorkel, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. After dinner, a sky full of stars beckons as you cross the equator for the last time.

GDay 6Rabida Island / Puerto Egas
This morning, disembark on Rabida Island, home to the most diverse volcanic rocks of all the islands. Rabida is considered the geographic center of the Galapagos. Its signature dark red sand beach resulted from the erosion of volcanic stones. Follow a trail that leads to a saltwater lagoon, and observe greater flamingos as they feed. Brown pelicans nest in the mangroves at the far side of the lagoon. After the walk, there will be time for snorkeling.
This afternoon, arrive by wet landing at Puerto Egas on Santiago. Stroll along the shoreline looking for octopus, starfish, and other sea life caught in the tide pools. At low tide, catch a glimpse of marine iguanas as they feed on exposed green algae. Watch for great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers, and yellow-crowned night herons. End at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where you’re likely to encounter shy fur sea lions, once on the verge of extinction.

HDay 7Santa Cruz / Darwin Station
When you wake up this morning, your yacht will be one of dozens anchored in the lively harbor of Academy Bay. You’ll disembark at Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, the social heart of the Galapagos, with a population of 24,000 residents. This morning, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and its Fausto Llerena breeding center, where you’ll learn about ongoing conservation efforts. You’ll see hatchlings and miniature tortoises that will be repatriated to their natural environs when grown. The newest exhibit honors Lonesome George, the famous last tortoise from the Pinta Island subspecies who died in 2012. With his subspecies now extinct, Lonesome George has become a worldwide icon, emphasizing the importance of efforts to preserve and protect endangered wildlife. You will also learn about Diego, a saddleback tortoise with a more hopeful story, whose species was reduced to 14 individuals before he was transported from the San Diego Zoo and fathered hundreds of descendants. All travelers in the Galapagos, regardless of itinerary, have the opportunity to visit the Darwin Station to learn about its research and conservation efforts and about Charles Darwin’s significant legacy.
Return to the yacht for lunch and later board a bus for a short ride to the highlands of Santa Cruz where you will walk through a lava tunnel, a hollow formation created when lava on the earth’s surface cools and hardens while molten lava continues to flow in the middle. Your next stop will be Los Gemelos (The Twins), a pair of large, deep craters with vibrant plant life at higher elevation. Then, visit Rancho Primicias, a privately-owned hacienda where giant tortoises – some weighing over 500 pounds – roam freely in their natural habitat, feeding or resting in shallow pools. Return to the yacht by zodiac for a delicious multi-course farewell dinner and goodbye presentation from the crew.

Pricing for Galapagos cruises can vary widely, and understanding how it works is key to choosing the experience that best fits your style, interests, and budget. At Journeys International, we help travelers navigate these options so the trip is worth every penny—whether you’re seeking a luxurious escape, a family-friendly adventure, or a scientific expedition.
1. Type of Vessel
The class of boat you choose plays the biggest role in determining the price. Journeys travelers typically choose one of the top two classes:
Luxury: High-end yachts and catamarans with spacious cabins, private balconies, gourmet meals, and premium service. Expect top-tier, experienced naturalist guides and small group ratios. Prices range from $9,000+ per person for an 8-day cruise.
First Class: Comfortable boats with good service, well-appointed cabins, and strong guide quality. A great balance of comfort and value, generally $6,000-$9,000 per person for an 8-day trip.
2. Length of Itinerary
Cruise itineraries range from 6 to 15 days, but 8-day cruises are the most common and often offer the best value per day. Shorter cruises are less expensive overall, but they often cover fewer islands and spend a greater proportion of the total time in transit to and from the Galapagos.
3. Itinerary Route
The Galapagos National Park tightly regulates cruise routes to preserve the islands. Boats follow set itineraries that rotate every two weeks, and each route offers different island visits, wildlife, and landscapes. Some routes may visit more remote islands, which can increase fuel costs and therefore pricing. Boats that offer particularly wildlife-rich or diverse itineraries may charge a premium.
4. Seasonality
While the Galapagos are a year-round destination, pricing fluctuates depending on the time of year:
High Season: Mid-June to early September and mid-December to early January—when families are traveling—tend to be more expensive and book up early.
Low Season: Late April to early June and September through November often offer lower prices and more promotions.
5. Inclusions
Cruise prices are typically all-inclusive once you’re onboard, covering:
Cabin accommodations
All meals and snacks
Daily guided excursions
Snorkeling gear
Transfers within the islands
Additional costs to consider:
Flights to/from the Galapagos (usually from Quito or Guayaquil): $500–$600 roundtrip
Galapagos National Park fee: $200 per adult
Transit Control Card: $20
Wetsuit rental (if not included)
Tips for crew and guides
At Journeys International, we carefully match each traveler with the right vessel and itinerary—balancing your budget, interests, and travel style to ensure your Galapagos experience is extraordinary, meaningful, and worry-free.
A luxury-rated yacht in the Galapagos Islands is designed to deliver the highest standard of comfort and personalized service, all while exploring one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Here’s what to expect:
Expect spacious cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows, private balconies, en-suite bathrooms with premium toiletries, and air conditioning. Interior design often features elegant, natural tones and modern furnishings that echo the archipelago’s landscapes and marine life.
Onboard Amenities:
Indoor and outdoor lounges, a sun deck with a Jacuzzi or plunge pool, and al fresco dining areas
Boutique bar, espresso station, and curated wine list
Snorkeling gear, wetsuits, kayaks, and glass-bottom boats for immersive exploration
Itinerary & Experience: Luxury vessels follow top-tier itineraries approved by the Galapagos National Park, often covering more remote and wildlife-rich islands like Genovesa, Española, and Fernandina. Activities include guided hikes, snorkeling with sea lions, visits to research centers, and intimate wildlife encounters—all led by certified naturalist guides with deep knowledge of the islands’ ecosystems.
Sustainability: Most luxury yachts in the Galapagos prioritize eco-conscious operations. Many are built with low-impact engines, efficient waste systems, and sustainable materials, and follow strict conservation protocols to protect the fragile environment.
A first-class-rated yacht in the Galapagos Islands offers an elevated level of comfort, style, and service, positioned just below the luxury tier while maintaining a strong focus on nature immersion and high-quality guiding. These vessels are ideal for travelers who value comfort and thoughtful amenities but may not require all the indulgences of a luxury experience.
Cabins are well-appointed, often with large windows (sometimes picture windows), private bathrooms with hot showers, and air conditioning. Some may include private balconies on upper-deck suites, though not always standard.
Onboard Amenities:
Indoor and outdoor common areas such as a lounge, bar, and sun deck
Dining room offering a mix of Ecuadorian and international dishes
Coffee and snack stations, library, and multimedia presentations
Snorkeling gear and wetsuits provided for all guests
Kayaks and panga (zodiac) boats for daily island excursions
Itinerary & Experience: First-class yachts follow well-curated itineraries approved by the Galapagos National Park, accessing diverse islands and habitats. Daily excursions include wildlife hikes, snorkeling, kayaking, and zodiac rides. The pace is active, and the focus is on meaningful wildlife encounters with interpretation from skilled guides.
Sustainability: Most first-class vessels follow environmental regulations closely and incorporate sustainable practices such as energy-efficient systems, eco-friendly waste management, and support for conservation efforts in the islands.
We do not recommend Tourist Superior or Tourist Standard Class vessels for Journeys International travelers, as these boats do not typically meet the standards of guide experience, sustainable operations, and facilities quality that we aim to offer on all adventures.

Why Journeys International
Our purpose is to understand the journey you are on – not just the vacation you want to take – and to help you on your way.
We are here to help you plan the trip that will move you closer to your goals and help you fulfill your dreams.
We are here to help you plan a more inspiring, more provocative, more breathtaking, more transformational adventure.
We say “adventure” and not “trip” because, for us, a trip is just going someplace else, but an adventure is an experience that takes you someplace beyond your comfort zone – and therefore maximizes the potential for wonder, discovery, and potentially transformation.
Why trust Journeys to plan that kind of experience with you?
